Planet Earth
1996, 31 minutes
Current Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Planet Earth’s fifth video, Silver, is from a time when flat ledges and benches were king and handrails were just starting to be exploited. Skating was starting to clean up its act as well, thus sketchy, turtle-slow footage is minimum in this video. The video’s about a 90/10 ratio, street to vert and mini. The soundtrack will bring you back in the day with some classic old school hip-hop and punk.

Silver was somehow overshadowed by skate classics Welcome to Hell and Mouse, which were all released in 1996. However, this video is definitely worthy of a closer look. Joey Bast starts things right and proves why he was a wonder child with his super clean style, good pop, and the elusive SSKFBSTS. Kenny Anderson shows where the roots of his skating come from, with speedy, butter-smooth tech lines and one of my favorite song selections to boot. Chris Lambert destroys some hefty gaps and handrails and Jason King throws down some of the most insane boneless variations on a mini ramp. Top this with the soothing rhythms and rhymes of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, ice it with a couple angst-ridden Fugazi classics, and what you have is an enjoyable skate video.
