February 06, 2002 411 Best of issue 4 reminds me of an issue of Transworld magazine. Transworld magazine reminds me of a textbook, except for most textbooks don't have ads. Technically, the substance and variety of terrain is all there, but it's kind of boring. Maybe this means I'm a sucker for gimmicks, but Lance Mountain's different intros are kind of funny for each video and often are the only part which doesn't follow the 411 textbook format. Bottom line: filmed well, produced well, good skateboarding and a variety of music, but probably belongs in the generic section of your local mall shop. Joe Flesci June 24, 2002 This video gets a big hoo-ha for the fact that it's actually a magazine. No, not a magazine that you would keep in your bathroom or go to Borders to not pay for, but a video magazine. It even includes all the advertisements that we love. Besides those advertisements, there is also lots and lots of skating. I mean lots. 45+ minutes of power to be exact. During those 45+ minutes you can see profiles of Marc Johnson, who I think is talking to Fruit of the Loom for a calf-high crew sock sponsorship, Andrew Reynolds, who likes to kickflip 13 stairs at a time with a 10 foot runway, Rune Glifberg, with his Denmark style of ass-kicking, and also Rodney Mullen and Daewon Song, who make me feel dumb about skating but smart at the same time from Rodney's science reading. This video has an arsenal of hard-hitters so you're guaranteed to get some of what you want. One thing that makes this video viewing worthwhile is Jesse Paez' big frontside 180 noseblunt. I found that when I watched it over and over again I reflexively made this sucking-air noise with my mouth followed by some super rad comment like, "hella." P.A.T. 3000
