A Soldier's Story
Life Skateboards
1991, 30 minutes
Current Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Life Skateboards rose from the ashes of H-Street and its first video, A Soldier's Story, takes the Ternasky/Magnusson populist approach to video production: no flashy gimmicks, just outstanding skaters and skating, always with an emphasis on innovation and fun. Most of the music is homemade from skater Ron Allen.

My friend John told me that if the U.S. government reinstates the draft, skaters will be first on the list. We push ourselves, tumble and fall, show little fear in the face of danger, throw our bodies into the fray, take our cuts, bruises and beatings and come back for more. Life Skateboards also drew the analogy between skater and combatant with their 1991 video, A Soldier's Story. This is an epic that stands the test of time as one of the best and like a trip to the Galapagos Islands, one can witness evolution here. Kit Erickson's part highlights a transition to stair sets, bigger gaps and combo tricks, like his kickflip frontside boardslide. Rail tricks also start getting gnarly here. Ron Allen's frontside tailslide down a handrail is a case in point. John Reeves' and the Donger's parts are also incredible and their ollieing power is legendary. Reeves also backside lipslides across the top of a big picnic table. My goodness! Sean Sheffey though has the standout part, including huge ollies and boardslides, an early grab out of a boardslide on a rail, a backside tailslide across a picnic table top and perhaps one of the most amazing tricks to go down on tape: a fakie ollie over a big picnic table from flat! This video closed the door on the previous decade's skating and ushered in an era where things could never be the same again.
